Logan's Birth Story

Sunday, September 21, 2008

I started having contractions on Sunday, September 21, 2008. I started timing them and they were anywhere from 3-6min apart. It was a tightening feeling up towards the top of my abdomen. They were not painful but just annoying. We went to L&D around 11am. I was checked and my cervix was still at 1-2cm and 30% effaced. Just like my last appointment. I was discharged from L&D at 12:30pm and was told to come back once the contractions were stronger.

We went out to lunch and then had our meeting at the Healthplex later that night. The contractions were still constant but not getting any worse. We went home that night and both of us went into nesting mode. We cleaned the whole house. We picked up the living room and dining room. Washed all the dishes, started the laundry, folded and put away all the laundry. We even vacuumed the house. Finally we went to bed.

I woke up around 3am cause I started to have lower abdominal cramps. They felt like menstrual cramps. Not real painful but annoying now. I started timing them and they were 3min. apart. I continued timing them for a hour and a half and they were still 3min. apart. The cramps were now getting stronger. I woke up Jason at 5am and told him that I think I was in labor. He said give it another half hour and then we’ll drive in. Well I did they got worse and he slept for that time.

We left for L&D around 6am. It was foggy outside that morning. It finally started clearing up about 6:30am. We got to L&D at 7am. At 7:30am, Dr. Lisak came in and checked me and I was at 3cm and 75% effaced. He said that I was a keeper. I was admitted to the hospital at 8am and moved to my new room at 8:20am. The nurse started the IV in my arm at 8:30am.

At 9am I had to go to the bathroom. When I got back in bed, as soon as I sat down it felt like I had peed myself. The nurse tested me with a long q-tip and it was amniotic fluid. Dr. Lisak came in and broke my water sac all the way. I was now at 3 ½ cm and 80% effaced. When Dr. Lisak broke my water, it was all green. He said that was because the baby had already had a bowel movement while in utereo. At 9:15am Dr. Lisak started me a small drip of Pitocin to help speed up the contractions.

Well, the Pitocin worked and at 11:30am I got the epidural. The contractions were starting to hurt and I did not want to be in pain anymore. I was very nice after that. The epidural did not hurt at all. I think because I was concentrating on having the contractions. At 12pm, I was checked again and I was at 4cm and 80% effaced. At that time I also had a catheter put in and an IV was inserted in my vagina to help flush out his bowel movement.

Me and Jason had a little bet to see who was the closest to his birth weight and length. My guess: 8lbs. 7ozs. and 20in long. Jason’s guess: 8lbs 12ozs. and 21in long.

At 1pm I was 5-6cm. By 1:30pm I was already at 7cm. They were worried about the baby’s heart rate. After each contraction that I had, his heartbeat would go down. So I had to lay on my left side, this helped. If I laid on my right side, it was a no go, he did not like that at all. I had to stay on my left side. Dr. Lisak inserted an internal monitor that was placed on his head to measure his heart rate more accurately.

I was able to get some rest. At 2:30pm I was checked once more and I was at 10cm! I tried one round of pushing at this time with the nurse. I did a good job and was able to move the baby down some. They wanted to wait and let the contractions help move the baby down. This way I did not have to push for so long. This is called laboring down. Both Jason and I took a nap from 3-4pm. At 4:15pm Dr. Lisak came in and checked me and wanted me to start pushing at 4:30pm.

4:30 rolls around and the nurse comes in. I start pushing and the three of us are all talking. It was actually nice and relaxing not stressful at all. I think I did four or five rounds of pushing with the nurse. At 4:55pm she left the room to get Dr. Lisak. He came in and got dressed, I did one round of pushing with him and told me on the next set of pushes that I should have the baby. Dr. Lisak then told me that I was starting to tear and I was going to get an episiotomy. I pushed for one more round and there he was out and crying.

Logan Everest was born at 5:05pm on Monday, September 22, 2008! Dr. Lisak clamped the umbilical cord and asked Jason if he wanted to cut the cord. He quickly grabbed the scissors and cut the cord. They then took him over to the table to get cleaned up. The neo-natal team was waiting for him. Dr. Lisak was worried that he might have of inhaled some of the feces in the womb. But everything was OK. The nurses took him to get weighted and measured. He came in at 7lbs. 15ozs and 19in. long. Looking back at the bet, I was the closest.

They swaddled him up and gave him to Jason to hold. That is when I started to cry. I knew then that we were a family.
